Heswall Gardening Society: Wildlife and scenery of Pembrokeshire coast – a talk by David Cummings. 7:30pm


Tuesday 6th November

The Burying Party – A live Q&A plus a screening of the new film about Wilfred Owen (12A), 7:30pm, at Heswall Hall. On the 100 year anniversary of his death the multi award winning film tells the story of the poet who returns to the Somme against the advice of his mentor Siegfried Sassoon, determined to follow his subject ‘The Pity of War’ to the very end.The evening will feature a live question and answer session with the cast and crew including Richard Weston (Director) and Matthew Staite (Wilfred Owen). Wednesday 7th November

Heswall Flower Club looks forward to welcoming Cheshire Area demonstrator Jacqueline Cooper with her demonstration “Serendipity” at Heswall Hall at 8pm. Join us for a tea or coffee beforehand. Demonstrations are held monthly. There are also seasonal workshops. Visitors and new members are always made very welcome. Details from Janet 336 5359. Wednesday 7th November

Heswall Hall Tea Dance: Come along and enjoy our lovely tea dance with live music from our resident trio, The Swingmasters. If you’re not a dancer, come along anyway and listen to the music, enjoy a cup of tea and a chat with new friends. 2-4:30pm. Admission £4 on the door.


Friday 9th November

The next meeting of Wirral Wildlife will feature a talk by Prof David Johnson, from the University of Manchester entitled “Underworld Connections: The Ecology of Symbiotic Mycorrhizal Fungi” in Room B, Heswall Hall, Heswall, at 7.30pm. Symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi are found in virtually all of Earth’s terrestrial ecosystems but remain understudied compared to many other groups of organisms. In this talk, Professor Johnson will describe how these soil-borne symbiotic fungi play crucial roles in regulating numerous ecosystem processes through their interactions with plant roots. He will focus on the importance of measuring their diversity and function, their roles in nutrient cycling in natural ecosystems, and in facilitating plant to plant communication. Admission £3. All welcome.
