Heswall is not Heswall
You
probably already know, but what everyone thinks of when they think 'Heswall',
is not the real, authentic, original Heswall. The genuine Heswall is, in
fact, the Lower Village, which sprang up in the 1800's, clustered around
(as was usual in those days) the Church.
Today, perhaps incredibly, the Lower Village still survives and thrives.
Despite significant set-backs - mainly the Post Office closing in 2008
and, more recently, Hedgerows greengrocers closing due to retirement -
the Lower Village businesses continue to trade well even in today's
tough economic climate. For example, Fred the Butcher and Elaine from
Emma's both report an excellent level of regular custom. 'We don't need
to advertise or put ourselves up for awards, our customers vote with
their feet' says Elaine.
Since Hedgerows closed, Emma's is selling (and serving) the famous
Crosslea Farm eggs, Fred is trying his hand at also selling
fruit & veg and Caroline in the Village Shop is selling bread and
savouries - not to increase their trade, but to support the local
community by filling in for Hedgerows.
So. When was the last time you visited the Lower Village? I don't mean
flying down to drop your daughter at Brownies or dashing to meet a pal
for a pint at the Black Horse.
I mean taking a break from the bustle of the Top Village and supporting
your other local shops, in the pretty, sandstone brimming conservation
area.
The Lower Village has a wonderful quaint, laid-back, character. Make the
most of it.
You'll be surprised how much variety there is in the way of shopping and
businesses. Just take a look at the list below. And where else
would you find a traditional 'browsey' gallery / antique shop next door to a
delightful modern interior designers?
Take time to enjoy your shopping - and life in general, come to that. A
leisurely stroll around the shops in the Lower Village will leave you
much the better for it. It's a great place to spend a bright fresh
morning or a sunny afternoon.
And while you're enjoying the better things in life, why not check out
the clubs and gatherings at the St.Peter's Centre, there might be
something just up your street.
Let's face it, if Sir Paul McCartney is a long-standing fan of
the Lower Village.....
